Core Quadrants

An unique and inspiring way to get to know: Core Quadrants

On the 20th of March 2014 I had given a workshop which was called ‘Get to know yourself and the others around you’. The workshop started at 10.30am and ended on 13.00pm. For this workshop I had borrowed a game which is called ‘Kern Kwadranten spel’, in English it’s called ‘Core Quadrants game’ by Daniel Ofman. This was very interesting and inspiring.

In this game there are 64 cards with a positive verb on them and 64 cards with a negative. Each card can go two ways, like a positive card can go to your quality, but you can also keep it as a challenge. With the negative card you can also go two ways, like a negative card can be a trap for you but also your allergy. For example you can think about words like these: Sense of humor, anger or open.

This game teaches us that everybody is born with positive quality’s and traps, which is negative about you as a person. But you can change it by recognizing your trap, so you can work on it. Then you have the allergy, which means what you as person despises in others. And at last you have the challenge, which means what you as person want to have and what you admire in others. Below you will see the diagram that we have used for our answers, so you can see it anytime.

If you are interested to get to know yourself and others then I can advise you to play this game, it is also good for the teamwork!

Drawing SoKo

Hello,
This will be my first personal post on this blog, exciting!
I’m going to talk about something that has inspired me lately. (To be honest, I’ve been obsessed with this so much that it has leaked into my art) That something is a person called SoKo.

SoKo is a French musician and actress. You may know her from one of the latest viral videos ‘First kiss’, which is about 20 strangers and their first kiss together. She’s one of the participants and her song is played in the background.

The thing that inspires me is her way of loving, especially her love-story with Keaton Henson. Keaton Henson is a musician I listen to a LOT and I love his music, it inspires me as well. Keaton makes the most painful love songs…ever. He sings about his painful love. I’m absolutely amazed by the feeling I get when I listen to his songs, the emotion I feel is overwhelming!

Recently I have found out that SoKo one of Keaton Henson’s ex-girlfriend and it made a LOT of sense. For some reason she is exactly like the girl I imagine in my head…the girl from the songs in real. That’s an aspect of SoKo that just amazed me. Finally an image from my brain is….there! It’s real!
I’ve done a little research on her, and just really grew fund of her and her way of loving. The aspect she “always get dumped”, even though she is amazing and that she’s always the one who ‘loves more’ or ‘wants it more’.
It made me realize there are more things than just looking good and being nice, there is something I don’t understand of love. SoKo turned out to be a ‘muse’ for me while drawing..  I like drawing her.

If you’re interested in their love story here is one of the songs they wrote for each other.
(It still confuses me, but alright)

Keaton - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LluhRTBk9g
(but I think this is Keaton’s real view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6-QvBz9_lY)

If you like heartbroken songs, take a look at Keaton’s album DEAR, those are one of my favorite songs!
The story is just so... emotional. I feel guilty enjoying this story, but it inspires me to put more emotion into my art as well, and I just feel really attached to the people. So drawing SoKo feels nice because it seems like I know her a bit, it’s just becomes a bit easier for me to draw her.

I hope my babbling about something that inspires me can give you a better view of why I keep drawing this chick, haha. Please share stories of things that inspire you! That could be other stories, people, places, etc. it’s all possible!

=) Have a nice day~!

With love,
Numana

Let’s get creative 10: challenges to spark your creativity

Let’s get creative: 10 challenges to spark your creativity

I’ve been working on various ways to get the mind in an creative mood. I came up with a few challenges that would spark creativity, and improve your artistic skills. For my workshop I picked one of the 10 challenges, the Colour Scheme Challenge. (10 challenges are found below)

The colour scheme challenge is actually pretty self-explanatory, you use a colour scheme to draw. The idea is that you pick 3 to 6 colours to make a drawing with. The best way to do this, is with painting in shapes rather than with lines, this way you unlock the full potential of this challenge.

I made a psd. document, found below, that could be used to do this challenge. I picked six colour scheme which each contained five colours. Another option was to use a selection of promarkers I brought. People could pick up to 6 colours to use on an art piece. The idea is the same, but without the amazing function of ctrl + Z.

Introduction Speed Painting:

The content of the lesson will be for advanced painters, you must be known with photoshop and other digital media forms.  After the lesson of today you’ll be able to create speed paints, and having the knowledge behind them; whether they should be your thing, or not.

Steps:
1. Open Photoshop (use the setting U.S. paper whilst opening a new file. )
2. Create a moodboard that provides you with sphere you’d like to create.
3. Create a rather dark background in order to participate through the next steps.
4. Keep the lightening in mind before placing the silhouette of your character onto the canvas.
5. After placing your character’s silhouette you’re ought to bring dimension and perspective into the silhouette, and the background.
6. Finishing touch; try to capture the right shapes and detail them towards your own preferences without overdoing it. (Reminding you that it is a speed paint, and done within a few hours and not an entire day.)

Recap of last week.

After a bit of a rough start, we are finally up and running.
Welcome to our blog, let me introduce us first.

We are the group Artlantis. We are 8 Students, studying Communication and Multimedia Design at the NHL Leeuwarden. We have this passion for Art that we want to share with each other and with everyone who wants to listen. We want to experiment, learn and get to know ourselves better. The plan is to make an exposition in which each of us can show our work. We also give workshops to share our vision and experience.

Let me update you on our progress: Last week we finally decided on an theme for our exposition: sprouting. The focus of the exposition will be personal growth.

Next to finding our theme, a few of us went to Groningen on Wednesday to get some art supplies. After obviously taking the right bus on the very first try, we totally weren’t a bit late when we finally arrived at the art store. So after spending a bit too much money, it had gotten quite late. So of course we decided to eat some delicious pancakes on the way home. Day well spend.

On Thursday there  was the very first art workshop, in which some of us joined. The focus of last week workshop was drawing proportions.
